UNODA Short Course Vienna-Based Organizations



In an increasingly complex international environment, global cooperation and effective multilateralism are key to tackle todays challenges. Vienna is one of the four headquarters of the United Nations and hosts a number of international organisations mandated to support Member States in a wider range of fields. While these entities contribute to all three pillars of the United Nations, including human rights and development, this course particularly aims to showcase contributions made by Vienna-based entities in the area of peace and security. In this field, acitivities of United Nations organisations located in Vienna include the promotion of nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation, the prevention of conflict by sustainable development, strengthening international cooperation in the peaceful use of outer space and addressing the threat posed by drugs, crime, corruption and terrorism.


Peace and security have many facets and there are multiple approaches to building more peaceful and secure societies. This e-learning short course aims at showcasing how key actors of the United Nations family contribute to this endeavour. The course also aims at promoting awareness and understanding, for how the promotion of development and security are interconnected and how this has been approached by the UN family under the pillar of the SDG in a comprehensive and holistic manner. Take this course and discover how the United Nations family in Vienna is helping to prevent conflict, insecurity and armed violence and reduce military means of conflict solution.


The course is open to all interested audiences.

Components and Methodology:

Each module takes approximately 15 minutes and can be completed at the learner’s own pace

The course consists of 6 thematic modules:
  • International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)
  • Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO)
  • United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO)
  • United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC)
  • United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs (UNODA)
  • United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA)

The course is available in English and is held in the Disarmament Education Dashboard, thus participants need a computer or mobile device, with audio and reliable internet connection. No special software is required.


Upon successful completion of thematic modules, including examination and course evaluation a certificate of completion will automatically be issued to the participant.

Short-course Series

The UN Office for Disarmament Affairs Short Course Series aims at making available quality education material on disarmament, arms control, non-proliferation and issues cross-cutting with security, such as gender and development. The courses are targeted for and available to the general public at UNODA’S globally accessible e-Learning platform

In line with the UN Secretary-General’s Agenda for Disarmament this short-course series aims to contribute to the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals.
